Fisherman badly assaulted

The man was fishing when unknown assailants beat him up using rocks and knobkerries

A fisherman was badly assaulted on Monday morning near Wagondrift Dam.

At around 6am, the man was fishing when unknown assailants caught him off guard and beat him up using rocks and knobkerries. A nearby farmer contacted Advanced Life Support (ALS) paramedic Frank Saltmarsh for medical assistance.

On arrival, Frank found that the man had been critically injured and stabilised the assault victim. However, he realised the man needed further medical assistance as soon as possible.

Being part of the Honorary Officers group in Estcourt, Frank informed fellow members that assistance was needed to transport a patient via boat.

Fellow officers came to the rescue and the team transported the injured fisherman to shore, where Sharaj Ambulance Services paramedics were waiting to rush the man to hospital.

The man sustained multiple injuries.
