Firearm recovered after shoot-out between police and suspects

A police officer and a member of the public sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to a nearby hospital

A suspect was shot dead, and a pistol and live ammunition recovered, after the Durban Tactical Response Team (TRT) followed up on information concerning illegal firearms in the Moyeni area of Upper Tugela, Bergville.

On Tuesday (December 6), officers proceeded to the above-mentioned area and were ambushed by a group of armed men.

A shoot-out ensued, leading to one of the attackers being fatally wounded. A police officer and a member of the public sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

A 7.65 mm pistol with four live rounds of ammunition, as well as several spent cartridges, were recovered at the scene.

An inquest and two counts of attempted murder were opened at Upper Tugela SAPS for further investigation.

KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Bheki Langa praised the policemen for their dedication that led to the recovery of the firearm and ammunition. “We will ensure that the suspects are arrested soon. I would like to wish the injured police officer and community member a speedy recovery,” he said.
