K9 officers back from gruelling training

Emma and Nancy, as well as their handlers, are ready to serve the Uthukela area

Warrant Officer Jacques Meyer (Search & Rescue) and Constable Sarah Lukhele from the Ladysmith K9 Unit have just returned after three months of gruelling training.

The duo trained at the Roodeplaat K9 Academy in Pretoria.

W/O Meyer has 22 years’ service in the South African Police Service, 20 of which have been at the Ladysmith K9 Unit.

He started out as a patrol dog handler and later opted to work in the Search & Rescue section. He is the proud handler of a beautiful three-year-old German Shepherd named Emma.

“We bonded immediately and by the third week, I knew she would be coming home with me,” said W/O Meyer.

They have already been out for water rescues (river and dam) in mountainous terrain, open area searches, tracking, evidence searches and confined space searches, among other activities.

Constable Lukhele has 10 years’ service in the SAPS and has served at the Ladysmith K9 Unit for the past seven years.

Her partner against crime is Nancy, a three-year-old Malanor (Belgium Shepherd) who is a patrol dog. The team have just completed an explosives course.

Nancy is able to detect firearms and ammunition, as well as explosives. She did her first sweep at a venue in Colenso recently and works very well with her handler.

Emma and Nancy, as well as their handlers, are ready to serve the Uthukela area.
