Suspect killed in shootout with police
A 7.65 mm pistol, with four live rounds of ammunition as well as several spent cartridges, was recovered at the scene
A police officer and member of the public were shot and injured during a shoot-out between suspects and police in Upper Tugela in Bergville.
The incident played out in the Moyeni area at about 10.30pm last Tuesday when members of the Durban Tactical Response Team followed up information about illegal firearms.
“The members proceeded to the area and were ambushed by a group of armed men. A shootout ensued leading to one of the attackers being fatally wounded,” commented police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele.
During the shootout a police officer and member of the public sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to a nearby hospital for medical care.
A 7.65 mm pistol, with four live rounds of ammunition as well as several spent cartridges, was recovered at the scene. Charges of inquest and two counts of attempted murder were opened at Upper Tugela SAPS for further investigation.
KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa praised the members for their dedication that led to the firearm recovery and ammunitions.
“We will ensure that the suspects will be arrested soon. I would like to wish the injure police officer and the community member a speedy recovered,” he said.
