Ladysmith police are looking for two people they believe may be in a position to assist them with their investigation of a theft.
On December 5, a 69-year-old man was withdrawing cash from an ATM at a bank in Murchison Street when his card was swapped.
People at the ATM pretended to help the elderly man and then made off with his card. Shortly thereafter, money was withdrawn from his account at another ATM in King Street.
Police are keen to speak to the two individuals depicted in the images.
Anyone who knows the whereabouts or identity of these two people are requested to contact Sergeant Sizwe Hlongwane on 0829595619 or 0366383429 during office hours. Crime Stop can also be contacted on the 0860010111 number.
Police appeal to the public to be vigilant when using ATMs:
- If you must use an ATM, choose one that is located inside a police station, mall or well-lit location. Withdraw only the amount of cash you need.
- Protect your PIN by shielding the ATM keypad from anyone who is standing near you.
- Do not throw your ATM receipt away at the ATM location.
- Do not accept assistance from anyone standing near the ATM. Rather go inside the bank and ask bank personnel for assistance.
- Should anyone try to distract you at the ATM, cancel your transaction, remove your card and leave the area immediately. Report the matter to police immediately.
- Before using an ATM, check for any discrepancies. Feel along the slots and keypad for any suspicious items or false covers.
