The Salvation Army is at a war to stop five con-men from tarnishing its name.
Apparently, the men pretend to be members of the organisation, all dressed up in appropriate attire, playing carols and asking for donations.
“While we know two of the men were from our church, we are not certain who the other three are, but they all have their own uniforms and music instruments,” said Major Naomi Malinga of Salvation Army.
It is uncertain how the men obtained the uniforms and instruments, but they have allegedly received some money from businesses.
“When the people saw the uniforms, they really thought these men were of the Salvation Army.”
“If people see anyone from the Salvation Army playing any carols or if they ask for donations, it is important to ask for their permit.”
Major Malinga said the Salvation Army did not send any of its members out in public without relevant documentary authorisation.
“The public has the right to ask to see the band’s permit. If they don’t have it, do not give them any money,” she warned.
The conmen can be reported to Major Malinga on 082 408 2409.
