KwaZulu-Natal Vehicle Identification Section has something to smile about after their dedication and investigations into vehicle-related crimes bore results.
Colonel Thembeka Mbele of the South African Police Service KwaZulu-Natal Corporate Communications, said police members presented evidence from October 1 to December 31, which led to the conviction and sentencing of 27 suspects for various vehicle related crimes such as car hijacking, theft of motor vehicles, possession of stolen vehicles and possession of unlicensed firearms.

These suspects appeared in various magistrate’s courts around the province, and were sentenced to between five and 18 years’ imprisonment.
The crimes were committed in the areas of Margate, Empangeni, Newcastle, oSizweni, Richards Bay, Umbumbulu and greater Durban.
KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa welcomed the convictions and sentencing of the criminals.
“These criminals are regarded as dangerous, as at times they use violence when hijacking vehicles. Community members are urged always to be vigilant when driving their vehicles and report any suspicious-looking people and vehicles in their vicinity to the police,” he said.
