“It is unknown how he drowned, but police investigations are under way to determine the exact circumstances leading to the man’s death.”
Another employee allegedly noticed the man in the pool, and summoned for the police.
It was speculated that the man was cleaning the pool area, and accidentally fell into the pool
Emergency services, including police, SAPS divers and paramedics were on the scene, and an inquest was opened.
After divers retrieved the man from the water, paramedics from Mercy Care Emergency Service along with EMRS declared the man dead.
As part of a safety campaign, police have issued the following tips one should be aware of before heading out to the pool:
– Swimming is a recreational sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. But its important to know how to be safe while you are in the water.
– Swim in designated areas supervised by lifeguards.
– Do not allow someone to swim alone.
– Never leave a young child unattended near water and do not entrust a child’s life to another child; teach children always to ask permission before going near water.
– Have young children or inexperienced swimmers wear approved life jackets around water, but do not rely on life jackets alone.
– Maintain constant supervision.
– Make sure everyone in your family learns to swim well.
– If you have a pool, secure it with appropriate barriers. Many people who drown in home pools were out of sight for less than five minutes.
– Avoid distractions when supervising around water.
– If someone is missing, check the water first. Seconds count in preventing death or disability.
