Thieves target Oval Track again

Commitee member, Johann de Jager said the club had continuously been targeted over the past few years.

Newcastle Raceway has yet again fallen victim to criminal activity.

In December, a large section of the enclosure fence was stolen.

Club members had hardly recovered from the shock, when the remainder of the fence was recently stolen.

Read:

“It was stolen all in one day. What I want to know, is how someone walks away with an entire fence?” asked

Newcastle Raceway chairman, Boet Buys.

“They have even started stealing the poles!”

Allegedly, the fence cost a staggering R18 400.

All monies collected during racing events go towards the upkeep of the track.

“People think we earn millions from racing events, but we don’t. We are financially struggling to maintain the track and the club house.”

Commitee member, Johann de Jager said the club had continuously been targeted over the past few years.

“2015 was the worst year, but while 2016 was not as bad, the continuous thefts have affected the club negatively.”

Mr Buys and Mr de Jager speculate the thieves were homeless people.

“They live in Trim Park and under the bridge, but we cannot prove it,” Mr Buys said.

Mr Buys appealed to the community for assistance.

“We would appreciate sponsorship, as we are running a loss and simply cannot continue maintaining the club and track due to the continuous thefts.”

Anyone who would like to assist Newcastle Raceway can contact Mr Buys on 083 467 6660.
