THE LOCAL SAPS are currently probing the case of a woman who was raped and then forced to take a bath at a tavern in Bhekuzulu.
According to the statement given by the victim, she had been drinking with a friends when a man she knew said that they had been drinking on his money and demanded that she pay.
The woman said that they had not been drinking on the man’s money and thus refused to compensate him for anything.
The same man is said to have later dragged her to a certain room where he raped her and thereafter gave her a bucket of water and told her to wash herself in order to remove the evidence.
After she had washed herself, the man told her to leave and to never tell anyone about what had just happened.
The woman went to report the case to the SAPS the next day.
“Although we receive such cases quite often, it is really difficult for us to tell women not to go out drinking as they have a right to go out if they want to. We would, however, urge them to always be very vigilant when going out to drink as many of these cases often occur while people are intoxicated,” said the SAPS’ Captain Cheryl Venter.
Captain Sizakele Ntuli from the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit said that a rape victim should still go to the police and the hospital regardless of the fact that they have taken a bath after the incident.
“Victims should come forward as we are the ones who can distinguish whether or not there is still enough DNA evidence to open a case,” said Captain Ntuli.
