Police officer hospitilised after assault

"No perpetrator may resist being arrested, or retaliate in a manner causing an officer to be injured or killed. "

A Newcastle police officer was severely assaulted while arresting a suspect in Kwamathukuza location on Friday, January 27.

According to SAPS Corporate Communications and Liaison Officer, Lizzy Arumugam, the officer had to be hospitalised after the assault.

“The officer received injuries to the face and mouth.”

During the assault, the suspect managed to flee the scene, and is currently still at large.

Mrs Arumugam said Newcastle SAPS has taken the offence very personally, and will not rest until the suspect has been apprehended.

She said a police officer was a government representative, but at the end of the day, they were also members of the public, with human dignity, feelings and emotions.

She explained they had to be impartial and fair, without prejudice, and uphold the constitution.

“An officer cannot please a criminal by letting them go when an offence has been committed in their presence. No perpetrator may resist being arrested, or retaliate in a manner causing an officer to be injured or killed. This is unacceptable and it goes against the constitution and basic human rights, including the criminal procedure act,” she explained.
