Stock recovered before being “missed”

The recovered cattle are valued at close to R200,000

20 head of cattle were recovered by officers from the Ladysmith Stock Theft Unit during a police operation conducted recently.

Officers were busy with Operation Qoqazonke in the Ekuvukeni area when they received information that stolen cattle were due to be transported to the Elandslaagte Auction Yard on Monday, January 30. During the night, the cattle were taken and stored at the Elandslaagte Auction Yard and left unattended when officers arrived.

The recovered animals were seized, after which the owner was identified and traced. At the time, the owner was not aware that his animals had been taken and admitted that he last saw and counted his cattle on Saturday, January 28.

At this stage, it is unknown when exactly the theft occurred. The recovered cattle are valued at close to R200,000.

Police are appealing to stock owners to arrange for someone trustworthy to oversee their cattle and to ensure that the cattle are counted daily. Branding of animals is also vitally important because it helps police identify and trace the identity of owners when stolen stock is recovered.
