When walking into one’s home at night, the thought of seeing a stranger in your home is a horrifying thought.

Yet, this is exactly what happened to a family living in Paterson Street.

Wishing to remain anonymous, victim of Saturday’s night stabbing and his mother relived what happened leading up to the event.

“I don’t live here full time, as I have a flat as well. I had finished work at 8pm that night and had come home quickly to fetch some stuff to take back to the flat,” said the victim’s mother.

After opening the door, her son came home and they had talked a bit.

“As I walked in, I saw a movement in the house and I stopped to look and see what it was.”

Which was just as well, because as she stopped a man jumped into the passageway.

“I screamed what are your doing in my house?! He said he was looking for a place to sleep and then ran through the house and out of the kitchen door.”

Her son, who was still outside, reacted and ran towards the backdoor and intercepted the intruder.

While her son was trying to stop the man from fleeing, his mother realised the suspect was armed with three of their kitchen knives.

During the fight, her son was stabbed in the neck.

“I did not even realise I was stabbed, until I saw the handle of the knife out of the corner of my eye,” said the victim.

Despite the wound, he refused to let the suspect escape and held on until police arrived.

“I could feel myself getting weaker, but I didn’t let go of him.”

When police arrived on the scene, the victim and the intruder had to be rushed to hospital.

The culprit sustained a knife wound in the stomach during the scuffle. It is speculated one of the knives he had taken, had slipped out of his hand during the fight and resulting in him being injured.

The victim has since been released from hospital, but the perpetrator is still under medical care.

“I am very lucky to be alive. If he had pushed the blade up or if there was someone with him, things would have ended differently,” said the victim.

Other than the knife wound, the victim has sustained a broken hand.

“I broke it while we were fighting,” he said.

While still in a state of shock, the victim said he believed the culprit had entered their house through the bathroom window.

“I was building a shower during and left the window open, as the bathroom was a bit damp and I wanted it to dry nicely. Another reason I believe he came in through the window, was because if he did, he would have seen where the knives were as he walked down the passage.”

The family claim that they will be more vigilant around their home.

“I have been living here for 14 years and this is the first time something like this has happened. We as people take it for granted when we walk into our homes that everything is fine, when we are meant to be alert,” said the victim’s mother.

Communication Liaison and marketing spokesperson, Lizzy Arumugam, confirmed the suspect was recovering in hospital.

The suspect will now be charged with attempted murder and is under police supervision at Madadeni Provincial Hospital.
