
Operations conducted by different clusters around KwaZulu-Natal yielded positive results when police officers seized various firearms and ammunition.
The operations were conducted from January 1 to 28, with a total of 139 firearms being recovered. These included 119 pistols, four shotguns, six homemade firearms and 10 rifles.
A total of 1431 live rounds of ammunition were also recovered during the operations. The firearms were taken for ballistic testing to ascertain if they were used in the commission of any crimes in the country.
Police managed to arrest at least 151 suspects for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. They appeared in the various magistrate’s courts across the province.

The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bhekinkosi Langa, congratulated the officers for recovering such a huge number of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
“We will make sure we apprehend all those who are in possession of illegal firearms. We warn members of the community who are in possession of unlicensed firearms that we will pounce on them anytime wherever they are hiding. We are also requesting those who are still in possession of deceased’s licensed firearms to make sure they apply for licences to possess such firearms or they will face the long arm of the law,” he said.
