53-year-old rapist sentenced to life imprisonment

Masengemu was accused of raping a six-year-old girl in the Bergville area

On Tuesday (February 7), the Ezakheni Regional Court convicted 53-year-old Bongani Isaac Masengemu of rape, sentencing him to life imprisonment.

He was further declared unfit to possess a firearm and his details will be entered onto the National Register for Sexual Offenders.

His conviction follows an investigation by the Ladysmith Family Violence, Child Protection & Sexual Offences Unit (FCS), where Masengemu was accused of having raped a six-year-old girl in the Bergville area on November 9, 2014.

On that day, he asked the six-year-old to accompany him to a shop, where he bought her sweets. On the way back, he asked whether anyone was waiting at the child’s home for her and upon realising that no one was there, he took the child to her own home and raped her.

He will spend the rest of his days behind bars for his heinous crime.
