KwaZulu-Natal South African Police Service Media Centre Communication, Liaison and Marketing Manager, Captain Nqobile Gwala is cautioning the public to be vigilant when drawing large sums of money at an ATM.
He said many people were also being robbed after withdrawing large sums of cash at the banks.
“We would like to issue a stern warning to the members of the public to refrain from withdrawing large sums of cash, as they put themselves at risk of being killed by ruthless criminals.”
KwaZulu-Natal, Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa said people should rather consider safer options, such as electronic transfers or internet banking.
This warning came after a 48-year-old woman withdrew an extremely large amount of cash from a bank last week. She was attacked by four unknown suspects who robbed her of the cash and two cellphones at gunpoint, before fleeing the scene.
“Members of the public are once again urged to refrain from carrying large sums of cash due to the high incidence of criminals targeting people carrying cash.”
Suspects involved in ATM or bank related crimes can be reported to Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
