Accused Hlanganani Vincent Madondo (30) was convicted by the Ezakheni Regional Court to 22 years’ imprisonment for rape.
He was declared unfit to possess a firearm and his details will be placed on the Register for Sexual Offenders.
On November 26, 2015, a 17-year-old girl was on her way back from a shop in the Emjindini area of Umhlumayo, Ezakheni, when she was accosted by Madondo along a footpath through the bushes.

He threatened her with a knife and raped her while a 10-year-old child, who was in her company at the time, managed to flee and call for help.
The girl’s family went in search of her and later found her in the bushes. Police were called and went in search of Madondo, who disappeared from the area. He was later traced and arrested in May last year.
The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa, praised the team for securing the conviction in court. “The members will continue with their positive approach in making sure that all those who prey on defenceless women and children are locked behind bars for a long time,” he said.
