Car crash wrecks fence for the umpteenth time
Gert Schoeman has witnessed many incidents at this notorious intersection, speeding vehicles along East Street are a great concern and have been the cause of many collisions along this perilous stretch of road.
GERT Schoeman, who lives on the corner of East and Heeren Streets, has pleaded with the municipality to make that particular intersection a four-way stop.
An accident took place on Saturday morning, culminating in a chain of events that left a large black Toyota standing in Mr Schoeman’s garden. According to Mr Schoeman, this is about the third or fourth accident of its kind in which he has incurred damage to his property.
Mr Schoeman recalls that at approximately 7am on Saturday morning, he was inside his home, when he was startled by a loud and resounding crash from outside. When he went to investigate, he was met with a surprising discovery, as he observed the smashed Toyota which had come to rest in his garden.
“I wanted to cry, just for the vehicle,” he stated, when describing his emotions at the scene of the crash. “That Toyota looked like it was brand new!”
According to Mr Schoeman, who has lived in the house for many years and has witnessed many incidents at this notorious intersection, speeding vehicles along East Street are a great concern and have been the cause of many accidents along this perilous stretch of road.
The exact details of this specific accident are unclear, but Mr Schoeman believes that the driver of the Toyota may have been traveling along East Street at quite a speed when a car, believed to be a Golf, emerged from Heeren Street in an easterly direction, possibly a little over the road markings of the stop street in order to get a better view of the approaching traffic.
This may have startled the driver of the Toyota, who allegedly lost control of the vehicle, hitting a fence on the other side of the busy road and somehow deflecting back across the road, over the middle island in East Street, hitting a tree and crashing through Mr Schoeman’s concrete fence, before coming to an abrupt halt in the garden.
Mr Schoeman says he has pleaded with the municipality to make the intersection of East and Heeren Streets a four-way stop for many years, or to at least implement some form of traffic calming measures to curb any further crashes or calamities occurring at this perilious junction.
