Finding salvation at Hope in Christ Mission
HIC hopes to break the cycle of abuse, neglect, HIV and abandonment in the lives of children, by empowering them and instilling strong family values, structure, love and support.
NEWCASTLE CBD – Hope in Christ (HIC) Child and Youth Centre hosted an open day, whereby stakeholders had the opportunity to explore the grounds and see first-hand what the centre offers, on Thursday, February 16.
HIC was founded as a safe house for children in November 2005 by the late Sarah Holland, and was registered as a non-profit organisation in 2009.
The purpose was to provide a home and schooling for orphans, abandoned and abused children in a safe environment.
At the time, the house accommodated 17 children, two of whom were HIV positive.
On February 9, 2010, HIC was destroyed by a fire, which claimed the lives of 11 people, including the life of founder and CEO of HIC, Sarah Holland.
Sarah Holland’s son, Andrew Pienaar, and his wife, Jo-Ann, stepped in and made plans to have the centre rebuilt.
After much prayer, hard work and donations, the centre reopened in 2014. Currently, it is home to 12 children between the ages of nine to 16 years, but will soon accommodate 24 more children once the building and reconstruction of two new buildings are complete.
Director and caregiver, Jo-Ann Pienaar said the building of the new centre was entirely funded by private sponsors. It was a delight to have the centre operational again, as it meant a great deal to her and her husband, she continued.
