Ladysmith snake man goes in search of huge snake in Hyde Road

Fanie searched the entire area around the house, but no snake could be found

A call came in yesterday afternoon (March 6) from members of a Community Policing Forum (CPF) group of a possible snake bite in the Hacienda Espana complex in Hyde Road.

The call came in as a possible bite from a grey snake, and all emergency personnel were notified.

Fanie Cilliers arrived at the scene and quickly assessed the situation, only to find that nobody had been bitten by a snake.

He quickly started searching the area where the homeowner said the snake was last spotted. The homeowner said she had spotted the snake on two occasions in the past two days under a wooden box.

While the search for the snake continued, the homeowner explained that the snake was “huge and grey in colour”. She had searched the Internet for the type of snake she saw and said it could possibly be a Mozambique Spitting Cobra.

Fanie searched the entire area around the house, but no snake could be found.

Fanie also noticed that the homeowner’s dog was calm and collected. If there was a snake in the area, the dog would not have been so calm. It was walking around the house normally, showing that the snake had most probably moved away from the area.

Speaking to Fanie, he says he has removed numerous Rinkhals snakes from the very same complex in the past, but not many Mozambique Spitting Cobras. He adds that the snake could have possibly been a Rinkhals.

He says it is very important for the right people to be called so that the snake can be identified correctly. In the case of a snake bite, the correct anti-venom can then be given.
