Barry Hertzog Park SPCA euthanises injured horse

The resident allegedly took pity on the horse and attempted to lead it away from the road to prevent further injuries.

MADADENI – SPCA Inspector, Elize van Rooyen recently had to euthanise a horse after it had been knocked over by a car.

“I got the call on Sunday, February 26, from a concerned resident in Madadeni.”

The resident allegedly took pity on the horse and attempted to lead it away from the road to prevent further injuries.

Ms van Rooyen was heartbroken when she discovered the horse had sustained a broken front leg, and on of its hind legs was swollen.

“It was really sad to see the horse in such pain. When I tried to move its front leg, you could actually hear the bones grinding.”

Ms van Rooyen encouraged animal owners to take responsibility of animals in their care.

“Always make sure your animal is secured and that you know where it is at all times.”

In incidents where an animal is severely injured, and dying on the side of the road, Ms van Rooyen said the police could also be contacted.

“The SPCA will attend to calls as soon as possible, but the police will also help in cases such as this,” she said.
