The entire Johannesburg-bound route, near Van Reenen’s Pass, is closed.
Motorists are urged to be patient while emergency services put out the fire and clear the roadway.
The incident has caused a backlog of traffic.
A single lane, north and southbound, will initially be opened to allow traffic to flow.
