MUST READ: Alfred Everson works his greenfingers

However, to ensure one’s plant flourished, Everson said clivias would need a cold environment to be set firmly in the soil, and with lots of attention to truly flourish and blossom.

Five years ago, Alfred Everson began a journey experimenting with his greenthumb.

“I became involved with the Newcastle Clivia Club in 2012, and enjoyed it so much I participated in its first show that same year,” he said.

His interest in the plant and dedication to the Clivia Club grew to such an extent, Everson became its chairperson the following year.

He then assisted in  having the club’s constitution drawn up. Since then, Everson worked tirelessly from within the Clivia Club to promote its colourful plants.

One of the highlights in his time with the club, was seeing it host the KwaZulu-Natal Clivia Show.

“We host a show every year, but it is the first time in the club’s history we hosted the KZN Clivia Show. This was quite an achievement for us.”

There are currently six identified clivia species and it is a sturdy plant.

“You can basically neglect it and it willendure. In fact, it can go three weeks without requiring water.”

However, to ensure one’s plant flourished, Everson said clivias would need a cold environment to be set firmly in the soil, and with lots of attention to truly flourish and blossom.

He also explained clivias were a South African plant, as it did not grow anywhere else in the world.

“In fact, the plant is exported to different countries.”

As the group’s chairperson, Everson said he enjoyed dedicating his free time to clivias, and the Clivia Interest Club, as well as the opportunities it offered him.

“I enjoy being able to interact with people and visiting people’s gardens to view their plants. I also admire the diversity of the clivia plant, and I get to learn a lot about nature. It is an excellent way to get rid of stress.”

Everson encouraged others to take up membership with the clivia club, to enjoy the club for the very reasons which attracted him.
