According to Newcastle SAPS spokesman, Captain Jabulani Ncube, the team went to a house in Inverness, oSizweni, where the three children were being held hostage by the suspects.

“A total of four suspects aged between 20 and 26 were arrested after they were found in possession of an unlicensed pistol. The hijacked vehicle has also been recovered in oSizweni C section.”

These are the events that led up to the incident:

The complainant was driving his uncle’s vehicle in Madadeni Section 7, when three suspects on foot flagged him down.

The suspects attempted to convince the driver there was a fault with the vehicle’s tyre.

Once the vehicle was stopped near Qaphelani School, the suspects threatened the driver with firearms and pulled him out of the vehicle, causing the children to scream.

The suspects then fled the scene in the victim’s BMW with the three children still inside.

The arrested suspects will appear in court soon on charges of carjacking, kidnapping, human trafficking and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
