Glencoe Police have opened an inquest following the tragic drowning of a baby in a bucket in which those asked to look after him had been urinating.
It appears as if the mother of the 10-month old left Sithembile for town and asked several women (the exact number is not known) to keep an eye on her child while she was away.
The women were apparently drinking at the time and as there was no water-borne sewage system in their area, were using a bucket in which to urinate.
Sometime later, the mother of the child was called on her cellphone to say that her son had drowned after falling into the bucket. The circumstances that led to the baby falling into the bucket and drowning are not clear.
The hysterical mother had to receive help as she threatened to commit suicide. The inquest will determine if criminals charges will be opened.
