Accused Newcastle sex offender to re-appear in court in July

The accused was caught and arrested in mid 2015, and was initially charged with more than 1 225 counts of child pornography related offenses.

The 35-year-old Newcastle man who was found guilty on 356 charges of child pornography in April, reappeared in the Newcastle Regional Court on Tuesday, May 29 for sentencing.

However, his defense advocate requested yet another postponement, as the accused was to be psychiatrically evaluated before the sentencing could proceed.

The charges against him varied from possession of child pornography, to statutory rape, grooming children for sexual activity and instructing another person to use children for child pornography purposes.

The accused was caught and arrested in mid 2015, and was initially charged with more than 1 225 counts of child pornography related offenses.

During the two and a half year court battle, various pieces of evidence, including disturbingly graphic WhatsApp chats, photographs and videos were brought forward.

The children involved also came forward to testify.

However, their testimonies were allegedly heard on camera to avoid intimidation from the accused.

Various officials, including cyber-crime experts, the SAPS FCS Unit and social workers also took the stand.

Although the magistrate in question did not at all seem impressed with the postponement request, he granted the accused a new date for July 19 at 8.30am, where final judgement and sentencing will take place depending on the evaluation report.
