The Madadeni High Court has sentenced 38-year-old Sikhumbuzo Mathe to an effective 60 years behind bars on five counts of rape.

According to SAPS KZN Corporate Communications Liaison, Colonel Thembeka Mbhele, the accused committed these heinous acts of crime across KwaZulu-Natal in places such as Dundee, Vryheid and Ekuvukeni, between October 2014 and November 2016.
It is believed Mathe accosted young girls between the ages of 14 and 16 years who were travelling alone. He would threaten them, assault them and then rape them.
The cases of rape were opened and investigated by Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit detectives from Dundee, Vryheid and Ladysmith.

“They did an excellent job in ensuring they sent well-prepared case dockets to the court for a successful prosecution.”
The accused was sentenced to a total of 60 years, which will run as follows: 10 years for each of the four counts of rape, and 20 years for the fifth one.
Each of the 10 year sentences will run concurrently, while the 20 year sentence will not.
