UPDATE: The case against Mayor Mbatha has been postponed

The matter has been postponed to August

Endumeni Mayor, Richard Mbatha, will only appear again in court on August 13.

The Mayor and two other accused,  Estcourt Councillor, Mthembeni Majola and the alleged hitman, Xolani ‘Shorty’ Makhathini, are charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit murder.

Defence Attorney Augustine said that the case against all three was based on conjecture and that it was not in the interests of justice to proceed with the case.

The defence argued that two of the co-accused were politicians and as a result of the case, they could not perform their duties.

The State Attorney, Advocate Zuma, asked for a postponement of the case as the state needs more time to obtain cellphone records and mapping, which will assist with the investigation.

The Magistrate agreed, saying obtaining the documents was in the interest of justice.

A contingent of IFP officials and members from Ulundi were in attendance and gathered outside the Court after the case was adjourned.
