The residents were left amused when the rates bill arrived in their postbox at the end of June, for a house they no longer own.

“They sold the house at the end of 2011; beginning of 2012,” said journalist, FC Pelser on behalf of the family.

Once the process of selling the house had been finalised, the family moved to the Ingogo area where they have since resided.

Despite this, they have still received three bills.

“Their postal address never changed so they get sent these accounts every now and then.”

The residents have reportedly approached the municipality multiple times, but have had no success in getting the municipality to understand the house is no longer in their name.

At that time, a resident came forward with a bill for 4c for a house she and her family had moved out of almost a year prior.

“It’s the first time I was billed for that address since I settled my final balance.”

The resident said she was certainly not exempt from paying, but pondered the logic of spending more to recoup a few cents.

“The municipality can use that money on something else.”

The municipality was approached for comment through its Communications Department, but no response was received at the time of going to print.
