A shooting incident took place last night (July 21) on the R74 between Colenso and Weenen.
Gunmen opened fire on a Toyota Quantum carrying at least 17 occupants, killing 11 people.
Another four are in hospital and two were uninjured.
The occupants in the Quantum are believed to have been returning from a funeral in the Greytown area when they were ambushed along the R74.
This incident is being treated as a high-priority crime by police due to the number of fatalities.

Paramedics treated those on scene before transporting them to hospital for further treatment.
RTI, the PMB Flying Squad, and police from Ladysmith and Colenso were on scene, as well as the Provincial Task Team and Ladysmith forensics.
The shooting is believed to be taxi-related.
