Update: Suspect shot dead by police in Geluksburg, outside Bergville, has been identified

The shoot-out occurred on July 16

The suspect who was killed in a shoot-out with police on the morning of July 16 has been identified as 77-year-old Johannes Jurgens Potgieter.

On the day in question, heavily-armed police officers, together with an SAPS hostage negotiator, entered the suspect’s premises just outside Bergville, Geluksburg area. The suspect allegedly opened fire on police, who dived for cover. The officers retaliated and the suspect was killed in the exchange of gunfire.

Police were responding after a shooting at the location earlier in the day.

Update: Update: 44-year-old man in critical condition after shooting outside Bergville

It is believed that a local had entered the premises just before 11am to recover goats that were allegedly illegally confiscated by the suspect. The suspect allegedly opened fire on the man, shooting him in the face.

The 44-year-old victim was rushed to hospital and police were called to the scene.
