On the fateful day in June 2016, Mr Warasally was with two security personnel, doing a shift change and paying his workers’ wages.
Alarm bells were triggered with the family when he hadn’t returned home by around 10pm.
Mr Warasally’s son and a family friend went out to search for him. In a frantic state of mind, they checked all the posts Mr Warasally would have reported to.
Heading along the N11, they spotted his bakkie parked near an abandoned hotel. However, initial relief soon turned to dread, as there was no sign of Mr Warasally.
After searching the area and turning up nothing, the family reported the incident to Newcastle police. Officers and relatives returned to the scene, and the search began anew. Mr Warasally’s body was eventually found in the abandoned hotel.
The prominent businessman had been stabbed and his body burnt.
