Community members get together and apprehend suspect in Ladysmith

A robber was no match for a team of tactical community members on Saturday when he was caught red-handed after a breaking into a house in Khwaja Street.

A member of the Hillside CPF (Community Policing Forum) was notified by his father that their shed at the back of their home was broken into and that their cut-off saw was stolen.

As he was rushing to get to their home he spotted a suspicious looking man walking down Centenary Road with a cut-off saw on his head.

The member recalled that his father has a saw that looks exactly like that, he made a u-turn and gave chase.

He approached and questioned the man about where he had got the saw from.

The suspect told him he had done nothing wrong and threw the saw at the member of the CPF narrowly missing him and hitting his vehicle.

The suspect then fled on foot with the CPF member giving chase.

During the commotion Zain from Daves Towing happened to be driving past, saw what was happening and also stopped to assist.
The suspect was cornered near Bengal Road by the community members.

Police confirmed a suspect (26) was apprehended by members of the community after he broke into premises in Khwaja Street, after he allegedly stole a power tool.

A docket of house breaking is currently under investigation with the suspect having appeared in court on Monday.

He faced a charge of housebreaking and theft. The community along with W/O Ramdheen and W/O Van Zyl is thanked for their valuable assistance in apprehending the suspect.
