Officers aim to eradicate theft of livestock in Ladysmith area

Pamphlets were distributed to community members, educating them about brand marks

A multi-disciplinary operation was conducted in the Amangwe area on Thursday, October 11, by Provincial Visible Policing, together with the Airwing, Ladysmith Tactical Response Team, Stock Theft Unit, K9 Unit and local stations within the Uthukela Cluster.

The operation was aimed at eradicating stock theft and recovering stolen livestock, as well as educating community members on the importance of branding their livestock.

23 stolen cattle were recovered, linked to various pending criminal cases.

Pamphlets were also distributed to community members to educate them about brand marks, the impact of stock theft and the consequences of buying stolen livestock.

The 23 head of cattle were recovered after Airwing members spotted a herd of about 600 cattle grazing unattended on the mountains. The animals were driven down so that they could be identified.

The remainder of the cattle rightfully belonged to community members, who informed police that they are taken in the mornings to the mountains to graze freely without supervision.

The operation was a success and similar operations will continue throughout the province to curb stock theft, recover stolen livestock, arrest stock thieves and educate the community about brand marks.
