Not just about fishing for SAPS anglers

Each SAPS member gave a monetary contribution which was used to purchase bulk food such as milk, oil, flour, maize meal, rice, sugar, vegetables, coffee, non-perishable items and meat.

About 100 SAPS anglers heeded the call to feed a Normandien family left in dire straits.

SAPS Captain Manisingh Singh, vice-president of the SAPS Freshwater Angling Federation, said the donation was made after Newcastle Station Commander, Brigadier Sumayela, identified the family.

“We believed it was our duty to give back to the community as our way of thanking them for allowing us to use the dam for our angling competition,” he explained.

She promptly burst into tears of gratitude and revealed the food donation was a gift in tough times as she still tries to come to terms with her parents’ deaths. She is now able to feed her four siblings she raised herself and her own two children.

“Thank you to everyone who made this possible and for helping me and my family to not have to worry about food for the next couple of months,” she said.

Captain Singh also thanked the federation members and Normandien SAPS members for contributing and ensuring the Khumalo family received the help they needed.
