Labelled as a ‘most dangerous criminal’ by police, the man evaded arrest when police intercepted a vehicle he was travelling in on Thursday.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele explained that Amangwe police, while conducting an operation, were given a tip-off about a suspect they were seeking.

“Officers received information that he was travelling in a stolen Toyota bakkie with other three occupants. The suspect was sought by Estcourt and Amangwe police for two counts of attempted murder where he attacked a man twice on different occasions,” said Colonel Mbele.

Police stationed themselves in the Rosedale area and waited for the vehicle. However when the vehicle occupants spotted the police, they fired shots at police.

“Police retaliated and one suspect was injured. None of the police officers were injured. Another suspect was arrested with no injuries,” commented the colonel.

Cell phones, an AK47 rifle with 80 rounds of ammunition and a pistol with several rounds of ammunition were recovered. Police also seized the bakkie, which was hijacked in Gauteng.

Initial police investigations revealed that one of the arrested suspects had another unlicensed firearm at his homestead in Loskop.

When police arrived at his home, they found a 24-year-old woman in possession of the firearm. She was immediately arrested and charged for possession of unlicensed firearm.

“The suspect that was sought for two attempted murder cases managed to evade arrest, with a friend. He is described as a most dangerous criminal, always clad in a bullet proof vest and carries a rifle with a number of rounds of ammunition at all times,” concluded Colonel Mbele.
