4 suspects appear in court after Van Reenen truck protest

During the protest action, 2 trucks were set alight

The four truck drivers who were arrested on Sunday (January 13) on the N3 in the Van Reenen area appeared in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday (January 15).

The suspects, aged between 28 and 38 years old, face a charge of public violence.

The drivers used their articulated vehicles to block both the southbound and northbound carriageways.

During the protest, two trucks were set alight.

Officers from the Uthukela Cluster and Newcastle Public Order Policing Unit responded swiftly and diffused the protest action, which was allegedly started by the truck drivers.

Four trucks were impounded by police.
