‘Cellphone light’ rapist sentenced to life imprisonment in Ladysmith

He was convicted of various counts of rape, robbery and housebreaking

Nkosinathi Sibusiso Phatsa (23) was sentenced to four terms of life imprisonment, plus 56 years, in the Ladysmith Regional Court on Tuesday (January 29). He was convicted of various counts of rape, robbery, housebreaking with intent to rob, and housebreaking with intent to rape.

The crimes were committed from August 2010 to July 2016 in the Hlati and Ekuvukeni areas.

Phatsa’s modus operandi was to break into homes in the middle of the night, and rape and rob the occupants, using only a cellphone light.

Senior Public Prosecutor Mrs Rene Schuler led DNA evidence linking the accused to the crimes, as well as medical evidence and the complainants’ testimonies.

KZN Director of Public Prosecutions Advocate Moipone Noko welcomed the sentence and conviction.
