PHOTOS: Annual Kavady ceremony in Suryaville

The Siva Subramanian Temple in Suryaville held its annual Thaipoosam Kavady on Sunday.

This auspicious celebration began with the pinning and piercings ceremony along with other prayers, near the Ncandu River on St Thomas Street.

Devotees decorated their kavadies and carried them from beside the river to the temple grounds. The carrying of a Kavady is a symbol of hardship and endurance displayed by faith, in carry ones burdens and surrendering them to Lord Muruga.

Once the Kavady ceremony was concluded, a lowering of the sacred flag ceremony was performed to signify the end of the official celebrations.
