34 protesters arrested for public violence

27 females and 7 males aged between 19 and 59 were arrested

Ematsheni detectives are currently investigating a case of public violence after members of the Moyeni community staged a service delivery protest on Monday morning (February 4).

The community used rocks and other items to block the main roadway in the area.

They also burned down signboard poles and damaged the road itself.

Police officers from Ematsheni and surrounding stations, as well as officers from the Pietermaritzburg Public Order Policing (POP) Unit descended on the group of protesters and arrested 34 people.

27 females and seven males aged between 19 and 59 were arrested.

They made an appearance in the Bergville Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, facing charges of public violence.
