Detective officer Sergeant BX Zwane wasted no time in identifying a suspect linked to a rape and murder that took place in Bombay Road in October 2016. That suspect will spend the rest of his life behind bars after being sentenced in court last week.
The deceased, Thobile Khoza (40), worked at a tavern metres from where her lifeless body was found.
Sergeant Zwane quickly located a witness and with the help of said witness, he established that the suspect was known to the deceased and that he worked at a car wash in the area.
The suspect had fled to the nearby St Chad’s area.
Sgt Zwane roped in the assistance of officers from the Ladysmith K9 Unit. With their dedication and perseverance, the suspect, Nkosikhona Delani Madoda Shabalala, was nabbed a week later.
He was charged and appeared before a magistrate. Bail was opposed by the investigating officer and the accused remained in custody until he received a life sentence in the Ladysmith Regional Court last week.
