Police seize firearms and arrest four in Weenen

A total of five firearms and an array of ammunition were recovered

Police have vowed to continue their war against illegal weapons. The latest success came when four people were arrested after being found in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The arrests were made in Weenen on February 18 during a joint effort by members of the Tactical Response Team members from EThekwini Central and Phoenix as well as Newcastle Public Order Police.

“Three men aged between 32 and 51 were arrested at Mtebhula area and they were each found with a pistol in their possession and a total of seven rounds of ammunition. They were charged and taken to the Weenen Police Station for detention. Police then proceeded to the Sahlumbe area where a 23-year-old male was arrested after he was found with two homemade firearms in his possession. A homemade rifle and a homemade pistol were confiscated. He was also charged for possession of unlicensed firearms,” explained police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala.

All the recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to ascertain if they were involved in any crimes in the republic.

“These operations will continue throughout the Weenen policing precinct and surrounding areas,” added Captain Gwala.
