Young chefs at St Gregory Primary School test their potjiekos skills

Learners and families had a wonderful day participating in the annual Potjiekos Competition

The grade four to sevens put their culinary skills and creativity to the test at St Gregory Primary’s annual Potjiekos Competition, on February 22. Learners from each grade were placed into teams and teamwork was the order of the day.

Chopping, peeling and slicing ingredients, while the fires were crackling, was the first step for each team in preparation for their traditional South African meal.

Once the ingredients were in the pots and placed on the coals and left to simmer, teams were required to come up with team names and war cries, to bring up the team spirit.

These certainly kept everyone entertained. Team water relays were played while cooking was in its final stages, and teams could earn a few points to add to their final scores.

Mouth-watering aromas filled the air and the cooking was complete, learners patiently waiting to find out who had the best tasting meal.

Mrs Russell and Mrs Londt took their seats to do the taste tests. Having difficulty to decide on the tastiest one, a decision had to be made and congratulations went to the “Fun Time Cooks” for the best pot of the day. The chefs then sat down to enjoy their delicious meals.

This really was a fun filled day for all the learners as well as the family members that joined in on the event.
A big thank you to all who joined in, and to Mrs Londt and her team for all the preparation into the successful day.
