
Police officers recently made two arrests for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. One of the firearms was a sub-machine gun.
Acting on a tip-off, officers from the Ladysmith Tactical Response Unit rushed out to the Endunwana area on Saturday, March 2, where they searched a premises. A 57-year-old man was arrested after being found in possession of a sub-machine gun, as well as 20 rounds of ammunition. The firearm was unlicensed.

In a separate incident, officers belonging to the Pietermaritzburg Public Order Policing (POP) Unit and Tactical Response Unit arrested a 23-year-old suspect in the Stulwane area of Bergville. This arrest was for being in possession of an unlicensed pistol and five rounds of ammunition.
Several shotgun rounds were found abandoned in the same area by the officers. A third firearm was retrieved by police after the court ordered that the firearm be removed in a domestic violence case.
Both suspects appeared in the Bergville Magistrate’s Court yesterday (Friday, March 15).
The recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to see if they have been used in any crimes in the country.
