Officers from the Newcastle Public Order Policing Unit pounced on two men in possession of firearms. One of the two men, aged 21, was found with a nine-millimetre pistol in the Weenen central business district (CBD) when the officers stopped and searched a vehicle on March 5.

The pistol’s serial number had been filed off and it was loaded with eight rounds of ammunition.

The other suspect (55) was arrested on a farm in Weenen. He was found in possession of a revolver with 21 rounds of various calibre ammunition.
“Operations of this nature will continue in an attempt to rid the area of illegal firearms and ammunition,” said police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Basheer Khan.
He added that the recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to determine if they have been used in any crimes in the province. The pair appeared in the Weenen Magistrate’s Court on March 7.
