Will Endumeni ever qualify as South Africa’s Town of the Year?
FC Bester of the Endumeni Residents’ Association who has longed campaigned for a mass ‘clean up’ of the town believes ‘it will never happen unless there is a serious change in mind set’.
Mr Bester was reacting to news that neighbours, Newcastle, are actively campaigning to be voted as the Town of the Year through the Kwela Award on Channel 144 on DSTV.
Newcastle won the coveted title about four years ago. Jeffery’s Bay in the Eastern Cape won the 2018 award and other past winning towns include Dullstroom and Clarens.
Asked by the Courier if Endumeni ‘should go for it’ to boost its image, Mr Bester said ‘as things stand it would be an embarrassment’.
“As someone who has lived here for over 40 years I can say that Endumeni is really scruffy now. Circumstances have overtaken us. While we can blame the municipality for many ills, it is up to ordinary residents to take up responsibilities by showing pride in their town by doing simple things like picking up rubbish, being considerate and acting normal.”
Armstrong Mndaweni, who helps to keep the town clean by scouring the parks for discard, also agreed.
“Coronation Park always produces a good yield. I collect the bottles and paper and sell these to places like Consol and recycling companies for extra money. If I was able to afford a compressing machine I would be able to so much more and even employ a few more people.”
He agreed that people in Endumeni should assist in making the town a showpiece of Northern KZN – which will add to the area’s tourist potential.
Mr Mndaweni opined that residents should get involved in clean-ups and help recyclers by separating their refuse accordingly – be it either paper, glass, cardboard etc.
