Woman shot dead over car keys in Roosboom

The suspect dragged Bongiwe outside the house, into a field, where he shot her three times

The Buthelezi family, residing in the Redhill area of Roosboom, is still in shock after a family member was shot dead by an unknown gunman on Friday evening, March 15.

The victim was Bongiwe Buthelezi (35).

According to Mrs Sthombe Buthelezi, who lived through the harrowing ordeal, a man stormed into their home while they were watching a ‘soap opera’ on television and demanded car keys from them.

“The incident happened at around 8.30pm while we were watching television. We heard weird noises coming from the back door. My grandson went to check what was going on, assuming that it was one of his uncles, because they were not at home that evening. He went outside and that’s when the suspect had a chance to get inside the house,” explained a still traumatised Mrs Buthelezi.

The suspect demanded the keys belonging to the car that was parked outside, but the keys could not be located.

“When we told the suspect that we didn’t know where the car keys were, he became angry and aggressive, and started assaulting us. By chance, my other grandchildren managed to escape and I was left with Bongiwe, my granddaughter. I instructed her to call one of my sons and ask him about the keys, but that also did not help.

“The suspect became angrier and dragged Bongiwe outside the house, into a field. Then I heard three gunshots. Bongiwe was screaming and begging for her life, and suddenly there was silence,” Mrs Buthelezi explained.
