School rocks out for autism awareness

Explaining the concept of autism to primary school learners of St Doms, Hand use the analogy of how if a brain is a person’s internal computer, not all are wired the same way.

No one person is the same, but kindness transcends any differences we have.

This was the clear message delivered by Adele Hand, a mother of an autistic child, during an informative talk at St Dominic’s Newcastle last Wednesday (April 2) – which is also Worldwide Autism Awareness Day.

Landmarks around the world were lit up in blue on this day.

The commemoration of Worldwide Autism Awareness Day at St Dominic’s began with the singing of Queen’s hit We Will Rock You by Hand’s son, Guillermo.

Fellow learners applauded his rendition of the song.

“Sometimes the person smells something, but the message to the brain goes wrong and they get confused.”

Hand’s message to the learners was to be kind and understanding to those who are different, as these can make the world a better place. This was punctuated by a symbolic ringing of the school bells.

Learners then moved to one of the school courtyards, where hundreds of bright blue balloons were released as further observance of Worldwide Autism Awareness Day.
