Creative waste management at Riverdale Primary School

Learners have become passionate about collecting waste and recycling

For the love of a clean and healthy environment, Riverdale Primary School learners were tasked with a fun recycling project.

Riverdale Primary Girl Guides Unit, Unyaka Wakho Youth Foundation Advocates For Change as well as Debby’s Bees Kings and Queens of Chess Club embarked on an exciting way to get rid of all the plastic and other litter strewn in and around the community.

Over the past week, the learners were given a lesson on the importance and benefits of recycling.

Eager to practice what they have learned, they began collecting recyclable items and brought them to school.
“The little learners have since become passionate about recycling,” shared their teacher, Mrs Gamede.

“We are looking into making eco bricks; it is a form of recycling made up of shavings of plastic or tin that is stuffed into a bottle. The learners have found this very interesting,” explained Mrs Gamede.

Mrs Gamede added that the learners are collecting sweet and chips wrappers, papers, cans, bottles, and bottle caps.
