May 8 will be the first time that Carryn Mdakani (18) and Khayalethu Majola (18) will be casting their vote at the polls.

Both Estcourt Secondary School learners are currently in matric. The Estcourt and Midlands News asked Khayalethu Majola, why she thinks it’s important to vote.

“It is significant in order to see drastic change within our government for the better. They literally focus on areas within their reach and forget the rural areas,” she answered.

Speaking to Carryn Mdakani, the Estcourt and Midlands News wanted to know what some of the changes are that she would like to see after elections.

“I hope to see better service delivery country – wide, more involvement from the local municipality and attention given to things such as potholes and community gardens,” she explained.

To keep the flame of democracy burning brightly in South Africa, it’s vital that each new generation be drawn into each aspect of electoral democracy.

Carryn Mdakani and Khayalethu Majola are excited to vote and hope to see the country, community and wards thrive.
